Indian Students Favour EU Over Canada as a Study Destination

February 28, 2024by admin

The study abroad trends report found that the percentage of Indian students preferring EU countries doubled compared to Canada. Earlier, Canada was among the most favored destinations along with countries like the US and UK. However, recent political issues seem to have negatively impacted Canada’s image.

Several instances of unfair treatment of international students with visa and post-study work policies not being implemented uniformly created distrust among potential Indian applicants. On the other hand, EU countries were able to project themselves as reliable options providing quality education and a safe immigrant environment. Individual nations like Germany, France, Italy garnered attention through their world-class universities and student-friendly policies. This shift clearly demonstrates the EU’s rise in popularity replacing Canada as the alternative to the traditional Anglo destinations.

EU offers affordable high-quality education

One of the prime attractions of EU countries is the low-cost or free public higher education system. Elite universities like the University of Berlin, and Sorbonne University offer programs at nominal or zero tuition fees for international students as well. This makes undergraduate and postgraduate degrees substantially affordable for Indian families compared to costlier private colleges in US, Canada and UK.

Simultaneously, the standard of education is of the highest quality with these EU institutions consistently ranked among the top 50 in worldwide rankings. Multiple disciplines across domains like STEM, humanities, and management are available and taught completely in English. Scholarship opportunities further reduce the financial burden. Overall, the affordable tuition expenses coupled with internationally recognized degrees make EU education an attractive value proposition.

Cost of living is lower

Living expenses form a major component of the total budget when studying abroad. However, EU destinations have lower living costs compared to traditional English speaking countries. Factors like cheaper rentals, less commuting charges, and inexpensive household items contribute to reduced expenses. For instance, in cities like Berlin and Krakow, high-quality shared accommodation starts from 250-300 euros per month.

Public transportation is also economical, enabling one’s independence. Additionally, European groceries and lifestyle essentials have lower prices. This allows students to focus more on their academics rather than doing part-time jobs to manage finances. The savings from such reduced costs of living strengthen the EU’s appeal, instilling confidence in Indian families regarding the affordability of the entire education stint.

Strong job prospects within EU

EU countries present a unique advantage of strong post-study employment opportunities within the 27-nation single market upon graduation. With no work-permit hassles for master’s degree holders from specific nations like Germany, the Netherlands, it is easier for graduates to kickstart their careers in the same country of study or elsewhere in the EU.

This is backed by a thriving job market and constantly created tech sector positions among other industries. Furthermore, the presence of multinational companies provides global career exposure within the EU itself. These favourable immigration policies and the existence of an extensive job network make the EU a safer investment for long-term career growth prospects after education compared to countries with restrictive work visa conditions post-graduation.

Rising scholarships for Indian students

Education hubs like Germany offer attractive scholarships of up to 100% tuition fee waiver under programmes like DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service).

Individual European universities also present scholarships recognizing academic merit and extracurricular achievements.

Exposure to vibrant European cultures

Studying in Europe opens doors to travel across multiple countries and immerse oneself in the diverse cultures, cuisines, sights and social experiences the continent has to offer.

This adds to the holistic education and helps Indians gain global exposure in a cost-effective manner.

Germany emerges as the top contender

Among preferred EU destinations, Germany has consolidated its position as the most favoured country for Indian students looking beyond traditional Anglo-American choices.

This is attributed to Germany providing world-class education with the least financial burden and strongest job prospects within the EU upon graduation.

Final Thoughts

To conclude, the combination of affordable quality education, lower cost of living, career opportunities, and exposure makes the EU bloc an attractive alternative for Indian families considering overseas studies for their children compared to Canada. Germany sits at the top as the new hotspot.
